Possums Wines was created by founders Dr John Possingham and Carol Summers in 2000. The 60 hectares of vines have remained with the owners since 1980, where grapes grown at these sites were sold to neighbouring wine producers. With technical expertise and experience, Possum Vineyards are now producing high quality grapes, suitable for premium estate grown wines.

Dr John Possingham is an agricultural science graduate of both Adelaide and Oxford Universities. His influence in the field of viticulture led to management of the Australian federal government’s research program as the Chief of research.

Dr John saw potential in the McLaren Vale vineyard sites earmarked for the vine pull scheme of the 1980’s. He purchased the Blewitt Springs and Willunga vineyards and employs well researched viticultural techniques with traditional practises to produce healthy, sustainable vines. He firmly believes that the quality of premium wines lies in the quality of the grapes grown on sustainable environmental sites.

Carol Summers left a prosperous career as the Deputy Divisional Director at the Flinders Medical Centre to partner Possums Wines. Carol has been instrumental in the branding of Possums Wines and handles administration and sales (both domestic and export), public relations, human resources and guest relations. Carol is also an avid gardener and will often be found planting oats and rye in our vineyards in order to improve raw organic materials within our soils.
