Bargain of the week: Possums Blewitt Springs Unoaked Chardonnay, McLaren Vale 2012, $14 This is amazingly sauvignon blanc-like, with lemongrass, passionfruit, almost cat-pee aromas. It’s straightforward and slightly sweet, without much finesse, but has lots of flavour and broad appeal. A crowd-pleaser. Drink now. 13.5 per cent alhocol. 85/100.

Food: Vegetarian dishes.
Stockist: Porters Liquor St Peters and Sylvania Waters.

James Halliday Wine Companion tasting notes

Possums Vineyard Shiraz 2005

“Makes a strong regional and varietal expression without resorting to excessive alcohol; blood plum, blackberry and bitter chocolate fruit supported by fine, ripe tannins; has absorbed 22 months in French and American oak.”

Possums Vineyard Shiraz 2006

“Retains very good hue; while it has a harmonious and complex array of aromas and flavours, is at the elegant end of the McLaren Vale spectrum, and is all the better for that; has deceptive length.”

Possums Vineyard Shiraz 2007

“A luscious, but not jammy, palate, with superfine tannins underpinning the blackberry fruit, dark chocolate and well-handled oak the finishing touches. Value.”

Possums Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

“Has retained good hue; it’s hard to imagine a McLaren Valley cabernet with more chocolate on the bouquet and palate, yet it doesn’t become a caricature thanks to its great balance and texture; really delicious, ready now.”

Possums Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

“In contradistinction to the ’07, the variety speaks louder than the region; most attractive blackcurrant and cassis fruit is supported by ripe tannins on the medium-bodied palate. Great value.”
